Outcomes for Life – At-Home Activity: Creative Expression

When we encourage children to express themselves freely at a young age, we give them an opportunity to develop their imagination, confidence, and more.

At Kiddie Academy®, one way we encourage Creative Expression is through things like “process” art experiences where the children have free range to use a variety of art materials to create something, instead of just following directions to make a predetermined final product. Creating the same environment at home allows children to feel safe to express themselves even further.

Here’s an activity you can try at home with your child to encourage creative expression:

Family Creations

Materials:

Directions:

  • Look through family photos with your child and encourage them to pick one or more family members that they can make using the dough
  • Invite them to use the modeling dough and tools, asking them questions about each family member, what they call them, and the activities they like to do with their families
  • If there are children who are not able to say the names of family members, invite them to point to certain family members. For example, ask, “Can you point to (mom/dad/grandma)?”
  • Encourage them to get creative with their creations, adding unique elements to each family member using the dough
