Our Character Essentials® theme for December is We Are Kind. As children grow, it’s important to instill kindness and thoughtfulness at every stage. By demonstrating things like generosity, helpfulness, and politeness, we help children become more aware of how others are feeling.
Demonstrating kindness as a family can have a big impact. By including your child in the process and implementation, they can see firsthand the joy these acts of kindness can bring to others.
Some things you can do together include:
- Baking cookies for the mail carrier
- Purchasing canned goods for a homeless shelter
- Leaving notes and drawings for the neighbors
- Making a homemade bird feeder or some other similar item to show thoughtfulness toward an animal’s needs
- Encouraging your child to look through their toys and set aside any they might be willing to donate
You can also read the following books together to help your child feel inspired:
- “George the Generous Giraffe” by Kim Trumbo
- “Reach Out and Give” by Cheri Meiners
- “Stone Soup” by Jon Muth
- “The Quiltmaker’s Gift” by Jeff Brumbeau
- “How Kind!” by Mary Murphy
- “The Nice Book” by David Ezra Stein
- “When I Care About Others” by Cornelia Maude Spelman
